Expert: US double standards on nuclear weapons threaten global stability
As declared by Joe Biden’s administration, American nuclear weapons are designed to warn America's opponents. In his talk with sb.by, military expert Igor Chibisov explained how the new nuclear strategy recently signed by the US President can affect global geopolitics.
“The document outlining the possible use of nuclear weapons is updated by the US authorities every four years. After the end of WWII, nuclear weapons act as a deterrent that prevents the United States from unleashing World War III. Since the United States can no longer maintain hegemony in the world, either politically or economically, only the military path remains. The events taking place in Ukraine show that the United States and its satellites — the countries of the collective West — cannot achieve the goals of strategic defeat of Russia by military means, by conventional weapons. Therefore, the United States does not reduce the urgency of the issue of the possible use of nuclear weapons (to achieve goals and maintain its power in the world). This is what their new nuclear strategy is aimed at. It focuses primarily on countering Moscow and Beijing. I think the United States will decide to expand its nuclear arsenals, and this decision is just around the corner. Apparently, the current American leadership does not understand the danger of unleashing a new nuclear arms race. The double standards of the United States on nuclear weapons threaten global stability,” the expert noted.
As stressed by Mr. Chibisov, only Russia consistently supports the extension of the START III Treaty. This suggests that its leadership understands what a possible nuclear war is, what nuclear weapons are, and what global problems may arise if this issue is not resolved at present.
“The new US nuclear strategy has been aimed at modernising the nuclear triad for decades. The United States is implementing large-scale programmes to replace and update nuclear warheads, missile, aviation and underwater delivery systems, as well as nuclear arms production facilities. The task is to form a new nuclear triad during the 2020s, which will serve the United States until the end of the 21st century. Of course, this will have a significant impact on global geopolitics. The United States is the only country in the world that used nuclear weapons in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan during World War II – although there was no military need for that,” the expert added.
“Who will give guarantees to the world community that the United States will not use nuclear weapons again,” Mr. Chibisov wondered. “Clearly, Russia and China will have to take symmetrical measures in their own nuclear doctrines: it means there is a possibility of getting involved in a nuclear arms race.”
