Expert: unity the ‘magic pill’ against hostile forces

There are enough forces today who would like to start a war against Belarus; that’s why it’s so important for our society to unite around our values and the country’s leaders, said MP Aleksandr Shpakovsky in his talk with Alfa Radio

“I repeat: it is better to work on the land than to drudge later. If there is economy, there will never be a war. If there is no economy, we will unleash a civil war ourselves. There are plenty of those who want to do so: they are rattling their weapons abroad. But they are afraid, because we are united more than ever, because we want to live on our land. They are afraid of this first of all, and not because the ‘Batka’ [meaning ‘father’ in Belarusian – Aleksandr Lukashenko’s nickname] is walking there with a club. They are afraid of our unity and that we want to work. If we lose this feeling, look what will happen. God forbid it,” said President Aleksandr Lukashenko at the official ceremony honouring agricultural workers during the Dazhynki-2024 regional festival-fair in Klimovichi.

As Mr. Shpakovsky noted, there are now enough forces that can’t wait to start a war within Belarus, as well as against it from without.

“There are certain people at the very top of the global ruling class who are pushing for the third world war. It’s hard to say why they are doing it. The financial incentive is clear: they control the military industrial complex, and the weapons spending in the recent years has been through the roof. The more weapons are made, the more profits the MIC gets. In some Western European countries the economy is stagnating, but the arms industry keeps growing, posting record profits,” he said.

As The New York Times reported earlier, citing sources, US President Joe Biden had approved long-range strikes with ATACMS ballistic missiles from Ukraine into the Russian territory. Mr. Shpakovsky pointed out that President Lukashenko’s words predate that development.

“As we all know, there’s a long way from a press release to actual aggressive actions of that type. But if it comes to pass, that would mean the Ukrainian conflict escalating to a completely new level. In other words, instead of de-escalation everyone expected after Trump’s electoral win, the conflict will escalate, possibly approaching World War Three. Of course that means military risks for Belarus, which have decreased significantly in the recent months through diplomatic efforts put up by the President, the Foreign Ministry and other departments, including intelligence, would go up again. We see that the global situation now can change in a way that would exacerbate the risk of war for Belarus,” explained the MP.

According to the speaker, societal unity is what we need in a situation like this.

“The only way to make it out from a crisis like this one with minimal losses or with no losses at all is to rally around the flag. I mean uniting around our values and our leadership, as well as full understanding of Belarus’ goals and objectives by its entire people. Those goals and objectives are to preserve stability at the time when the old world order is breaking down and transforming, to survive, and to take a good position in the new multipolar world we are advocating for. And of course, the end goal for us is to keep the war from spilling to the peaceful, sovereign and prosperous Republic of Belarus we’ve spent decades building. Societal unity is a magic pill against hostile forces that will never stop pushing Belarus. That is our geography and out historical fate. Everyone who reviews the Belarusian history can see that I’m right. So as it stands, our security is guaranteed by our strength,” Mr. Shpakovsky concluded.
