Expert: the US made decision to shift the burden of financing the conflict in Ukraine to Europeans

The NATO Summit is being held in Washington on July 9th-11th, and it is officially dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949. Since 2022, the alliance countries have provided assistance to Ukraine in the amount of $98bn, also announcing the largest increase in defence spending over the past decade: 23 states out of 32 NATO member countries have raised their military spending to two percent of GDP in 2024. In his talk with sb.by, military expert Igor Chibisov explained why the North Atlantic Alliance is spending huge sums on its own security and support for Ukraine.

“The increase in NATO defence spending indicates that Washington has made a decision to shift the burden of financing the conflict in Ukraine to Europeans. After all, the United States is actually running the NATO bloc: Americans are the ones who decide where, how much and for what purpose money should be spent. At present, the United States wants to focus on domestic issues and a full-scale confrontation with China. In turn, Europe is destined to become Ukraine's main sponsor: the United States has put enough pressure on the EU, finally deprived it of sovereignty, forced it to abandon cheap Russian energy resources and imposed an increase in military spending in order to send more aid to Kiev. By shifting the financing of the Kiev regime to Brussels, Washington plans to even greater weaken the European economy and strengthen its own military-industrial complex. After all, it is the Americans who produce most of the weapons for NATO. The United States acts in the way so that to gain benefits: its military-industrial complex is being provided with work for many years to come,” the expert said.

As noted by Mr. Chibisov, NATO member states have agreed at the summit to allocate 40bn Euro in aid to Kiev in 2025, to further provide Ukraine with arms and military equipment, and to strengthen its defence system.

“Against this background, Belarus is alarmed by the policy of the leadership of neighbouring Poland, which has embarked on a comprehensive militarisation,” the expert added.
