Expert predicted results of Putin-Trump meeting on Ukraine settlement

A meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump is highly likely, said Aleksandr Shpakovsky, a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, in his talk with Alfa Radio

Mr. Shpakovsky believes that backroom contacts are definitely going on between Moscow and Washington, “And Minsk knows about that. Some heads of state came out to say their countries are ready to provide a venue for that meeting, and their eagerness is understandable. We do not presume that Belarus should be present at the meeting between Putin and Trump, but if negotiations on the Ukraine settlement start, Belarus would want to send a mission there in order to make our position heard. I believe a meeting between Putin and Trump is highly likely, although the outgoing US administration is going to do everything they can to put the trumpists that are coming to replace them in as uncomfortable a position as possible.”

He went on to clarify that he meant several incoming military aid packages to Ukraine from the US and the escalation steps taken by the Kiev regime.

According to the expert, the conflict is unlikely to end in the near future.

“The parties are obviously not ready to sign a peace treaty, much less transition to a stable global security architecture. Besides, look at Trump’s statements. So far, it’s really hard to tell which of them are populism and which are his honest intentions, but he obviously cares very little about the established national borders. He claimed that Denmark should surrender Greenland to the United States, said they are going to annex Canada, and demanded handover of the Panama Canal. Furthermore, Trump and his representatives do not rule out using military force. That means that Pandora’s box is open. I wouldn’t say the world is entering a stage leading up to agreements that would cement the rules for various systems’ co-existence in the coming decades. The situation is still fragile,” the MP said.
