Expert on possible EU forces’ deployment in Ukraine: new reality rife with unexpected turns

Former Estonian PM, now EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas did not rule out deployment of European troops in Ukraine. Talking to Alfa Radio, MP Aleksandr Shpakovsky commented on this new development.

First of all, the expert reminded that the subject of possible EU troops’ involvement in Ukraine is not new: French President Emmanuel Macron, for instance, has publicly admitted it is possible.

“There are lots of discussions around this subject. The publicly available conditions from the so-called [US President elect] Donald Trump’s peace plan list foreign troops’ deployment. [Speaking on the subject] on my Telegram channel, I intentionally used the word ‘occupiers’ which I crossed out and replaced with ‘peacekeepers’. Effectively, that means foreign troops in Ukraine, that’s the way they see that. But the thing is, if the Russian Federation, as one of the belligerents, does not agree to that, no foreign military will send anyone there if they can help it. If the troops are there without Russia’s consent, that would mean direct involvement of the North Atlantic alliance in a conflict with Russia on Ukrainian territory. It’s not clear at all if those countries’ elites and policy makers are going to agree to that. I wouldn’t submit to propagandist narratives about those politicians being weak or worthy of mockery. I have said it time and again that the key thing about the Western governance is their shadow political realm. That means that Macron, Baerbock and their kind are all nothing but a smokescreen. The West is an iron hand in a velvet glove. The new reality, therefore, is rife with unexpected turns: is something hasn’t happened before, that doesn’t mean it will never happen in the future. We are following the relevant statements closely and making our plans based on that scenario as well. Of course, we are hoping that using their powers of military demonstration and diplomacy, the Russian Federation is going to be able to, let’s say, disabuse our Western counterparts of making any sudden movements,” explained the expert.
