Expert: economically, USA has already abandoned Europe

Europe has lost the economic competition, and that may lead to serious problems, said Dean of the Journalism Department at the Belarusian State University, political expert Aleksei Belyaev when talking to Alfa Radio

On the subject of a possible European future with Donald Trump in the office in the USA, Mr. Belyaev said, “The European Union is divided. There’s no unity there and never has been. When it comes to the European security, lots of hopes used to be pinned on the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance (NATO). But in reality, NATO expansion to new countries only led to those new members, feeling emboldened by their newfound protection, behaving like thugs. Instead of being an alliance that provides security, NATO lead the European countries to the brink of a disaster. Everyone thinks now that when Trump comes to power, he’s going to push isolationist policies, ignore global affairs, cut military support for Europe, among others, leaving them all to fend for themselves somehow. But so far, I don’t see any conditions for the Americans to forego NATO as a condiut for their influence.”

The expert added that the US has already abandoned Europe to its fate economically.

“NATO will persist as an American political influence tool. Europe is in the doldrums economically, being, for all intents and purposes, a donor for the American economy. We see their industry being siphoned to the US. American policies brought Europe to the brink of an energy collapse. Average energy prices in Europe now are two to three times higher than in the US. By promoting green policies, for instance, Europe played itself, because they can’t even legally buy cheap hydrocarbons now. There are serious problems that threaten Europe: it’s losing the economic competition. If the US cuts support, they are going to be left begging,” he concluded.
