Erdogan: some US statements on Middle East ‘worrying’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that some statements from the United States concerning Middle East are worrying for Turkiye, and that he expects his contacts with President elect Donald Trump in that area to be productive, TASS reports

Talking to journalists from his press pool after his visits to Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan, President Erdogan said it’s too early to make any conclusions about the impact Trump’s re-election will have on the situation in the region. He believes it is better to wait until Trump replaces Joe Biden in the office and see what he does then. He added that during his second term, Trump should ‘move away from the erroneous policy of the previous administration’ because some statements coming from the US are ‘worrying’.

Erdogan also brought up his phone call with Trump a few days after the latter has been elected, and said he believes they will maintain the same level of contact going forward. He added that his contacts with Trump in 2016-2020 were a level above those he used to have with President Biden. In conclusion, the Turkish President expressed his hope for both governments to act in the best way, so that both the United States and Turkiye could benefit.
