Economy Ministry: Belarus provides its people with excellent social support

Belarus provides its people with excellent social support, the Economy Ministry says

Speaking about the growing efficiency of social support, the Ministry’s press service emphasised that every Belarusian who applies for social welfare and is entitled to it, gets it. Over 170,000 people are recipients of social services today. 146 local welfare offices provide them to people who have faced some kind of hardship. There are 92 social boarding houses and 2 centres for families and children.

“100 percent of our citizens have access to healthcare services. When it comes to the access to doctors and other health professionals, Belarus is ahead of many European countries. There were 61 specialist doctors per 10,000 people in the country in 2023, against 43 per every 10,000 in 1993. The average number for the EU is 33, for CIS countries – 38. Nursing staff availability rose from 113 to 136 per 10,000 people, also higher than in the EU (86) and the CIS (62 per 10,000). High tech healthcare services are rapidly developing. In 2023, Belarus placed 18th in the social progress rating by Social Progress Imperative, in the Basic Healthcare category” states the press service.

The Economy Ministry also pointed out that family remains a key focus of the Belarusian government’s social policy. One in every five minor children in the country receives social welfare. Among children under 3, this share is close to 100 percent. In 2023, the Social Protection Fund paid Br3bn, or 1.4 percent of GDP in benefits to families with children. This level of childcare support is one of the highest in Europe. The Family Capital programme is available for families with 3 or more children: over 140,500 Family Capital deposits have been opened to date. Families with children enjoy tax cuts, job and pension guarantees. 6,000 large families and 6,600 recently married couples were able to purchase new, better homes. The result is a steadily growing number of large families that has already passed 123,000.
