Economy Ministry: 90% of municipal solid waste to be re-used in Belarus by 2040
90 percent of municipal solid waste will supposedly be re-used in Belarus by 2040, as outlined in Belarus’ National Strategy for Sustainable Development 2040 (NSSD 2040), sb.by reports with a link to the Economy Ministry’s website
The national industry’s green transition requires efficient and prudent use of natural resources, responsible production and consumption. In order to grow its closed-loop economy, Belarus has to accelerate development of areas and functions that extend products’ service life: re-use, rent, or repair them. In that context, the planned introduction of new business models is focused on more efficient use of existing assets and resources, like eco-industry parks, industrial symbiosis networks, sharing platforms, and information resources that popularise the above. Increased re-use of communal solid waste (from 35.5 percent in 2023 to 90 percent by 2040) is a key indicator there.
The three pillars of sustainable development, as defined by the Economy Ministry, are: safe and clean environment, preservation and rational use of natural resources, and closed-loop economy development.
In the environmental safety area, the country’s priorities are: minimising the adverse consequences of climate change, reducing harmful emissions, and fostering an environmentally-friendly culture.
The green development vector presupposes increasing the number of resource-efficient, cleaner production sites that widely use waste as recyclable materials. A number of measures are there to incentivize that: green taxation, green government procurement, green financing support tools, etc.
Current objectives include: expanding land designated as nature reserves to 9.3 percent of the total area, increasing the share of surface water bodies with good and excellent environmental status to at least 85 percent, and reducing the damaged land area to 1,000 hectares.
