China telecoms sector shows solid growth in January-May 2023
China’s telecommunications sector demonstrated a strong growth in the first five months of this year – according to the data from the Chinese Industry and Information Technology Ministry, Xinhua reports
The combined revenue of enterprises in the Chinese telecoms sector in January-May 2023 amounted to 712.5bn Yuan (about $99.24bn) – an increase of 6.8 percent year on year.
In particular, the combined revenue of industries such as Internet data centres, big data, cloud computing and the Internet of Things grew by 20.2 percent year on year during the reporting period, which contributed to the growth of the total revenue of the telecommunications business by 3.8 percentage points.
The data also show the expansion of 5G services. As of late May, there were more than 2.84 million 5G base stations in China, with a net increase of 90.73 million 5G mobile phone users in the first five months.
