China developing insect-like robot for lunar exploration

Chinese engineers are designing an insect-like six-legged robot for future exploration of the Moon’s surface, TASS reports

Gao Feng, a robotics developer from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, said the insect-like robot differs from the robot dog in its enhanced stability, robust load-bearing capabilities and smooth movements. According to him, the six-legged robot can land and walk. Engineers are developing this device aiming to achieve a qualitative breakthrough in the aerospace field.

The insect robot lifts three legs simultaneously, while the remaining three form a stable triangular base supporting its body. This allows the robot to maintain stability even if one leg is damaged. The tests are being conducted in Shanghai.
