The university noted that the leading Belarusian university is behind only two repositories: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the French national scientific aggregator HAL Open Science. Earlier, the BSU repository held the ninth position in the ranking.

“Among universities, the BSU digital repository has steadily gained a foothold in the second position in the world, behind only the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, which is the highest rated and one of the largest in Brazil,” the university stated.

The rating covered more than 4,000 digital repositories of universities and research centres from all over the world. Among other Belarusian universities, the Belarusian National Technical University (28), the Belarusian State Economic University (136), and the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (165) have the best indicators. Ural Federal University (33) and Tomsk State University (55) became the best among Russian universities.

The assessment is based on one criterion: the number of library documents indexed by the Google Academy search engine (Google Scholar). Thus, the degree of openness of the university's academic resources and the degree of their integration into the global information space are assessed. The BSU electronic library contains more than 232,000 documents, of which 178,000 are indexed by Google Scholar.

The Open Access Repository Ranking is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, which is known for its webometric university ranking. The purpose of the ranking of electronic libraries is to support open access to scientific publications and educational materials in electronic form. Its creators strive to motivate researchers to publish the results of their scientific activities on the Internet, making them available to colleagues and interested people around the world. Thus, the level of openness of academic resources and their integration into the global information space is assessed.
