Belstat: as of early 2023, Belarus’ population totalled 9,200,600 people

The National Statistical Committee of Belarus (Belstat) has prepared a statistical review for World Population Day, which is celebrated annually on July 11th

As of January 1st, 2023, the population of the Republic of Belarus was 9,200,600 people – 0.1 percent of the world’s population and 1.2 percent of the population of Europe. In terms of population, our country ranks 97th worldwide and 7th among the CIS member states.

The area of Belarus is 207,700sq.km – more than the area of the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg combined.

The population density of our country stands at 44.3 people per square kilometre – more than the population density of such CIS countries as Kyrgyzstan (35.5 per km²), Turkmenistan (13 per km²), Russia (8.6 per km²), and Kazakhstan (7.3 per km²).

As of January 1st, 2023, 63.6 percent of the population were adults aged 18-64, 19.9 percent were children aged 0 to 17, and 16.5 percent were elderly people aged 65 and older. 7,212,400 people lived in cities and 1,988,200 people – in rural areas. For urban residents, the average age was 40.2 years, for rural residents it stood at 44.9 years.

As of early 2023, 1,315,400 people lived in the Brest Region, 1,091,900 in the Vitebsk Region, 1,347,500 in the Gomel Region, 989,700 in the Mogilev Region, 1,462,000 in the Minsk Region, and 1,995,500 in the city of Minsk.

In 2022, there were 4,950,295 women in Belarus, and 4,250,322 men.

According to the 2019 census, 7,990,719 Belarusians, 706,992 Russians, 287,693 Poles, 159,656 Ukrainians, 13,705 Jews, 9,392 Armenians and 8,445 Tatars live in our country.

The level of employment of the population of working age is 83.7 percent of the population of the corresponding age.

Provision of the population with housing in 2021 stood at 28.9sq.m of total area on average per inhabitant, in 2022 the figure was 29.4sq.m.

About 95 percent of the population uses apartments and single-family residential buildings for living (according to the 2019 census of the Republic of Belarus).
