“The atlas describes 44 invasive plant and 15 invasive animal species,” the science department elaborated. “It also contains guidelines on how to detect them, react, and monitor their spread.”

As scientists reminded, an invasive species is a species outside its own natural habitat which, with via its uncontrollable spread and numbers, poses a threat to biodiversity, or harms various economy sectors. Some invasive species, such as Sosnowsky's hogweed, can be dangerous for human life and health.

“Invasion of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and Belarus as a whole by non-native species intensified significantly in the recent years,” said the national park representatives. “There’s a number of factors that boost their spread: global warming, growing intensity of transport and trade flows, transport infrastructure development, etc. The atlas is targeted at the national park’s forest protection services to enable timely detection of invasive species and immediate measures to contain them.”
