Belarusian People's Congress to be ready for work in new format by March 2024

Oleg Romanov, the Chairman of the Belaya Rus Republican Public Organisation, has informed on when the Belarusian People's Congress will be able to work in its new format

As he delivered a speech at a dialogue platform focusing on the discussion of a draft bill On Belarusian People’s Congress, Mr. Romanov said that law should be adopted no later than March 19th, 2023. Further, during the 2024 electoral campaign, deputies of all levels – including of local councils of deputies and the House of Representatives – will be elected on a single voting day. Following the results of the elections to local councils of deputies, members of the Council of the Republic will be elected.

“After that, formation of the Belarusian People's Congress will begin, and by March 2024, its delegates will have been named. After that, the Congress, its session and adoption of urgent decisions will determine the development of our country for the coming years, and maybe decades," Mr. Romanov noted.

During his conversation with students and teachers of the Belarusian State University, the Belaya Rus Chairman informed on tasks set for the Belarusian People’s Congress, and how the structure will be formed. He recalled that, in February 2022, a seriously updated Constitution was adopted, and one of its articles is devoted to the Belarusian People’s Congress – a new political institution in the country.

Mr. Romanov stressed that the Belarusian People's Congress had proved its effectiveness during six previous sessions. “Since 1996, it has been regularly meeting and making fateful decisions. After gaining a constitutional status, it is no longer the body that can or cannot meet by the President’s decision and initiative. This is already the body that is integrated into the state system of separation of powers, and it performs important functions in the country’s political and public life,” he added.
