Belarusian COVID-19 vaccine passed clinical trials
In line with the Head of State’s instruction, the Healthcare Ministry and scientists have implemented a project to create a domestic vaccine against coronavirus – as noted by Belarus’ Deputy Healthcare Minister, Chief State Sanitary Doctor Aleksandr Tarasenko
“A significant project for the Republic of Belarus has been implemented, resulting in the creation of a domestic whole-virion inactivated vaccine for the medical prevention of COVID-19,” said the Deputy Minister. “The Centre for Examinations and Tests in Health Service of the Healthcare Ministry has registered the vaccine in the Republic of Belarus.”
From 1924 to 1950, the first vaccines were created in Belarus: typhoid, dysentery, anti-tuberculosis BCG, diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, and rabies vaccine. However, over time, competencies and production capabilities were lost. The following organisations took part in the development of the vaccine: the Republican Research and Practical Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology, the Scientific and Practical Centre Lotios, the Belarusian State Medical University (BSMU), the Gomel State Medical University, Belmedpreparaty enterprise, the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre of Transfusiology and Biomedical Technologies, the Institute of Physiology at the National Academy of Sciences, and BelVitunipharm JSC.
