Since the beginning of the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant, Belarus has been accumulating valuable experience in building nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure. According to the IAEA, such experience is of interest to newcomer countries implementing their first nuclear programme. At the IAEA request, Gosatomnadzor organised training on nuclear and radiation safety of nuclear installations for ENRRA representatives.
At the first meeting, the guests were given presentations on the development of the regulatory infrastructure for nuclear and radiation safety in Belarus, as well as on the formation of the regulatory framework in this area of activity. In turn, ENRRA representatives told their Belarusian colleagues about the Egyptian nuclear power programme and regulatory infrastructure.
The guests learnt about the main stages of NPP life cycle licensing, the procedure for reviewing and evaluating documents justifying the safety of nuclear power plants. The Egyptian specialists showed great interest in the strategy of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management.
The programme of the visit includes studying the regulatory control process and supervisory activities during the commissioning of the NPP unit, as well as state supervision of nuclear and radiation safety at the nuclear power plant. An introduction to sci-tech support organisations is planned to take place at the Scientific and Engineering Centre for Nuclear and Radiation. Special attention is paid to regulatory issues in the field of emergency preparedness.
During the internship, the guests will visit the Republican Centre for Emergency Management and Response, the Educational Centre for Life Safety, the Information Centre in Ostrovets and the training centre of the Belarusian NPP. In addition, meetings will be held with representatives of the Energy Ministry.
The visit will last until November 22nd.
