Belarus’ PM suggested organising CIS Forum of Regions, first could be held in Belarus

During his speech at the meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council, Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko suggested organising the CIS Forum of Regions by analogy with a similar congress of the Union State

Speaking about the need to develop CIS interregional economic co-operation, Mr. Golovchenko proposed to unite regional potentials within one large-scale event, taking into account the Belarusian-Russian experience.

“The first CIS Forum of Regions would contribute to the development of interregional economic liaisons. This format operates in our countries on a bilateral basis, in particular, Belarus and Russia have already held eleven regional forums. We know that other countries also practice this format of interaction. Therefore, there is a proposal to try to organise such an event, but in a broader format within the CIS members,” the PM said.

Mr. Golovchenko’s proposal was supported by his colleagues. In particular, Chairman of the Russian Government Mikhail Mishustin was in favour of holding such an event in the near future, “Roman Aleksandrovich Golovchenko’s proposal deserves our attention. We have a lot of bilateral relations between our regions. So let’s think about it, and I believe we will all support this idea. Sergei Nikolaevich [Lebedev], think about where we can hold the first forum. In this sense, Russia is always ready to present its candidacy, but the initiative came from Roman Aleksandrovich [Golovchenko], maybe then there will be a place for the event in his country?”

“Easily!” the Belarusian PM reacted.
