Belarus officially joined SCO
A decision on the membership of the Republic of Belarus in the SCO was signed at a meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State in Astana, attended by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko. Our country has become the tenth member state of the organisation.
Belarus views the SCO as an international platform for identifying specific mechanisms to develop interaction in countering the threats of terrorism, extremism, organised crime and drug trafficking. Our country advocates strengthening the SCO economic dimension as the most important factor of stability in the Eurasian region.
Belarus has been participating in the SCO since 2010 as a dialogue partner and since 2015 as an observer. On September 16th, 2022, a decision was signed during the SCO summit in Samarkand to begin the procedure for Belarus’ joining the organisation.
As part of the SCO accession process, Belarus has joined over 40 treaties. Belarus takes an active part across all the main dimensions of the organisation’s activities: political-diplomatic, trade-economic, cultural-humanitarian, as well as military co-operation, including tactical exercises. Belarus’ State Security Committee (KGB) has signed a protocol on co-operation with the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS).
