Volfovich: we should value peace on our land more than before

On National Remembrance Day of Victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Genocide of Belarusian People, a funeral requiem rally was held in the Brest Fortress, gathering heads of departments, military and civilians to lay flowers at the Eternal Flame and honour the memory of those killed in the first days of the war with a minute of silence. The State Secretary of the Security Council, Aleksandr Volfovich, noted that June 22nd is a day of national memory and sorrow. According to him, this date is filled with a special meaning on the sacred land of the Brest Fortress, which was one of the first to take an unequal battle with the Nazi invaders.

“On this day 82 years ago, a ruthless armada of fascists – bringing death and slavery – marched on our country. The hopes of millions of families were destroyed overnight, the destinies of entire generations were broken. Every Belarusian family pays a debt of memory and deep gratitude to all those who did not live to see the bright Victory Day, but believed in it, taking an unequal battle with the fascists. Society – primarily, young people – is now becoming the object of attempts to revive the ideology of Nazism and justify the genocide. Monuments to Soviet soldiers are being destroyed in countries saved from fascism. This suggests that the war is not over. It has broken out in a new guise, and it continues in other dimensions: informational, cultural, and spiritual. The ideological followers of those who stood on the other front line do not give up trying to rebuild the world for themselves,” Mr. Volfovich stated.

The State Secretary noted that the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War is the most important component of a successful development strategy under these conditions, and it is to be protected from any distortion.

“The lessons of that war teach us unity and cohesion. Knowledge of history and respect for it form a sense of national pride – pride in the generation of winners. Today, more than ever, we should all appreciate peace on our land, do everything possible to preserve it. Only then will we be able to remain united and to withstand any challenges,” Mr. Volfovich added.
