Ten years have passed since February 7th, 2014 when Winter Olympics kicked off, and Sochi has hosted a major sports festival today on this occasion. Viktor Lukashenko has taken part in the opening of Winter Sports Day.

Ten years ago, the Sochi Olympics brought together almost three thousand athletes from 88 countries, becoming the most successful Games in the history of sovereign Belarus.

“The Sochi Games were very memorable for Belarus, as the country was ranked among the top ten. I hope we will be able to repeat or even surpass this success in the future. Our athletes became real heroes then, showing the best possible result,” Ksenia Sankovich, the NOC Secretary General, said, adding that the proximity to Belarus – both territorial and mental – was a major advantage of the sports event. “We did not have to get used to a new cuisine and a new time zone. The Olympics were quite accessible for our fans then, many people came from Belarus to cheer for the sportsmen. I would like to note that Russians also supported our national team," she said.

As noted by Anton Kushnir, he is always happy to remember his performance in Sochi ten years ago, “A decade has passed like a flash. I think it was important for our country to win those particular Games. Every time I come back here, I get a lot of positive emotions. I am thankful to the organisers who invited Alla and me to Winter Sports Day. Everything is perfect here, and we can feel the scale of the event,” he stressed.

Alla Tsuper also shared her emotions, “It is a pleasure to take part in such an event here, in Sochi. We remember how everything was organised. Those were the fifth Games for me, and the gold medal was my most long-awaited present. I would like to wish all young people to play sports and believe in themselves.”
