US plans to rejoin UNESCO in July
UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay said that the United States officially notified the organisation of the renewal of its membership starting in July, RIA Novosti reports
The United States left UNESCO under the presidency of Donald Trump.
“On behalf of the US Department of State, I would like to inform you that the US is honoured to present a return plan to UNESCO,” US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma said in a letter.
It is noted that the notification was made privately.
The United States intends to restore its status as a member of UNESCO almost six years after the previous head of the White House, Donald Trump, announced its termination.
The plan for the return of the United States was agreed upon as a result of lengthy negotiations between the Department of State and UNESCO representatives. It also contains a schedule for paying off US debts, the news agency reports.
