Unused NATO base in Turkiye to be turned into tourist facility
Turkish authorities are considering the possibility of turning an unused NATO base in into a tourist destination, RIA Novosti reports
The NATO radar base, located in the Macka area of the Trabzon Province in the Black Sea, was used by the alliance during the Cold War due to its proximity to the territory of the USSR. However, since 2010, the facility has been abandoned. Recently, a group of deputies from the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party has visited the base.
“We exchanged ideas on the need to make the NATO base a tourist destination. We’ll present the prepared draft to the Culture and Tourism Ministry. God willing, in the near future the base will be transferred under the control of our prefecture and we will work to create a new tourist facility in Trabzon,” Anadolu news agency quoted Macka Mayor Koray Kochan as saying.
Local media wrote about plans to use the base as a tourist facility back in 2017 and 2021, but the project was never implemented.
