UNICEF: 700 thousand children in Sudan at risk of worst form of malnutrition
According to UNICEF, in 2024, 700,000 children in Sudan are likely to suffer from the worst form of malnutrition, with tens of thousands likely to die, Reuters reports
Sudan’s 10-month war between the country’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has devastated the country’s infrastructure, brought famine and displaced millions of people inside and outside the country.
“The impact of the last 300 days suggests that more than 700,000 children are likely to suffer from the worst form of malnutrition this year. UNICEF will not be able to treat more than 300,000 of them without providing improved access and additional support. In this case, tens of thousands are likely to die,” UNICEF spokesperson James Elder told a press conference in Geneva.
He defined the most dangerous form of malnutrition as acute, in which a child is 10 times more likely to die from diseases such as cholera and malaria.
