UN warned of desertification threat in Southern Europe
The countries of Southern Europe will face the threat of desertification if global warming exceeds 3 degrees Celsius, TASS reports
“The whole of Europe is vulnerable, especially the Mediterranean. We can already see that desertification is occurring not only in North Africa, but also in the southern fringes of Europe, such as Greece, Portugal and Turkiye,” Jim Skea, the Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), noted in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
The expert also noted that one of the most negative consequences of global warming may be the formation of a hot and humid climate in many countries, making it difficult to conduct certain types of economic activities. For example, Poland may face difficulties in growing potatoes, while durum wheat varieties may disappear in Italy.
Jim Skea also added that global warming of 3 degrees Celsius could occur by 2100.
