UN says climate extremes cause food shortages for 56.8 million people
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said climate extremes pushed a staggering 56.8 million people into acute food insecurity last year alone, TASS reports
The UN said world leaders will have to make concrete decisions at the upcoming UN Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai, held from November 30th to December 12th.
At COP28, WFP will call for immediate support to scale up climate protection for food-insecure communities whose lives and livelihoods are threatened by global heating, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Communities need access to early warning information, financial protection through anticipatory cash before disasters hit and climate insurance for crops and livestock, as well as shock-responsive social protection system.
WFP has already supported 15 million people across 42 countries with protection against climate shocks.
