Ukrainian refugees in Poland may be left homeless
After Poland’s liquidation of the programme to support refugees from Ukraine, many of them are in danger of losing roof over their heads, RIA Novosti reports
Non-governmental organisations have expressed strong concern about the consequences of eliminating the programme. Previously, homeowners in Poland who housed Ukrainians in their homes were paid 40 Zlotys (about $10) per person daily. One-time payments for the refugees themselves in the amount of 300 Zlotys (about $75) have also stopped.
According to the IAR news agency, the Polish authorities, proposing to cancel the ‘40+’ benefit, explained this by difficulties in ensuring the reliability of the system. More and more applications for the programme were submitted by Ukrainian citizens themselves, raising doubts whether they were hosting people who were members of their families.
Public organisations underline that the cancellation of the ‘40+’ programme without adequate support for people with disabilities, suffering from mental disorders and other communities will worsen the living conditions of these refugees, whose situation was already difficult. The lack of housing programmes increases the risk of homelessness among this group and reduces the chances of integration into Polish society.
