Tusk: Poland’s ex-ambassador to NATO accused of having ties with foreign intelligence services
Polish former ambassador to NATO (2019-2024) Tomasz Szatkowski was convicted of having links with foreign intelligence services, with the Polish military counterintelligence conducting a corresponding investigation back in 2019, TASS reports
“According to the results of the investigation by the Military Counterintelligence Service, which we informed Mr. President [Andrzej] Duda about, Mr. Ambassador [of Poland to NATO Tomasz] Szatkowski was charged with mishandling classified documents and contacts with foreign intelligence services,” Poland’s PM Donald Tusk said during a meeting of the Sejm (the lower house of the Polish Parliament), broadcast on the TVP Info channel.
According to Tusk, Szatkowski was charged with obtaining unauthorised financial benefits and lobbying the interests of foreign companies when preparing documents directly concerning state security. The PM said that the military counterintelligence conducted this investigation back in 2019, similar information was confirmed in 2022. However, Mr. Tusk added that the intelligence service hid these facts from the Internal Security Agency when the diplomat’s candidacy for the post of ambassador to NATO was being co-ordinated, as well as when extending his access to classified information.
