Tesla to build battery factory in Shanghai
In May 2024, the American company Tesla will begin construction of an enterprise in Shanghai to produce Megapack powerful batteries for storing energy, TASS reports
According to the information resource Peng Pai (or The Paper), with reference to Tesla representative office in China, it is planned to launch mass production of Megapack batteries at the factory in Q1 2025. The enterprise will be Tesla’s first energy storage system factory outside of its US domestic market.
In December 2023, the signing ceremony of the agreement on the acquisition of land for a new enterprise took place. The plant will be located in Shanghai’s Lingang District, which is considered a pilot free trade zone.
Earlier it was announced that the design capacity of the factory will be up to 10,000 Megapack batteries per year, which is equivalent to 40GWh of energy. Megapack batteries are designed to stabilise the power grid and prevent failures in its operation.
