State Border Committee: building ‘iron curtain’ and militarising border area are hallmarks of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia
The building of the 'iron curtain' and the total militarisation of the border area are the hallmarks of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, Belarus’ State Border Committee spokesperson Anton Bychkovsky told sb.by
Describing the current situation on the Belarusian section of the Union State border with the European Union, Mr. Bychkovsky noted, “The migration agenda remains relevant and directly depends on the situation at the state border. We can note a slight drop in the density of migration flows, but the nature of the actions of the EU neighbouring states in relation to refugees – seeking to transit to the developed countries of Western Europe – has not changed. These actions are still illegal and inhumane. The building of the iron curtain and the total militarisation of the border area are the hallmarks of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.”
He stressed that both refugees and the population of the border area are suffering.
“Moreover, the unique nature of the adjacent border area suffers from the actions of the security forces. Anyway, there is still hope to rectify this situation if the leadership of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia returns to the rule of law. Solving this problem is not an extremely difficult task, it is laid down in the generally recognised principles and norms of international law, conventions, as well as treaties on border issues between Belarus and the EU neighbouring states,” the official representative of the State Border Committee added.
