Germany’s plans to achieve climate neutrality by 2045 will not come true – according to the draft report of the expert group under the Environment Ministry, RIA Novosti reports

The report, cited by Spiegel, states, “Germany’s current and planned climate policies are not enough to reach the official target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.”

It’s noted that, even in a best-case scenario, the country would still have net emissions of 160 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year by 2045. Even in 2050, it will be more than 100 million tonnes per year, the authors of the document write. As of last year, greenhouse gas emissions in Germany reach 745 million tonnes per year.

According to the report, the measures taken by the German authorities are not enough to achieve net-zero emissions. However, scientists do not exclude the possibility of achieving the goals set for 2030: reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent compared to 1990.

Earlier, the German authorities shifted the goal of achieving climate neutrality from 2050 to 2045. This happened after the German Constitutional Court partially satisfied the claim of eco-activists, calling the previously set goals insufficiently ambitious.
