Sergeyenko: recommendations on unified state policy in the field of historical memory needed

The work of the Republican Council for Historical Policy under the Belarus President Administration should be aimed at implementing the instructions of the Head of State on the preservation of historical memory which he voiced in his Address to the Belarusian People and National Assembly – as noted by the Head of the President Administration, Igor Sergeyenko

Speaking at a meeting of the Republican Council for Historical Policy, Mr. Sergeyenko stressed, “The President called the preservation of historical memory one of the conditions of sovereignty. A protocol of the instructions of the Head of State has been prepared following his Address, and this instruction [on the preservation of historical memory] has been formulated for us as well. It follows directly from the text of the Address, and our work should be aimed at its implementation.”

The Head of the President Administration noted the need to develop recommendations on the implementation of a unified state policy in the field of historical memory and the organisation of work to strengthen national consciousness based on the scientific ground and principles of the Belarusian statehood history.

According to Mr. Sergeyenko, the activities carried out by the Council last year and in 2023 have contributed to the implementation of this task. Meanwhile, the work needs to be updated and, probably, be supplemented with a new relevant content. The Head of the President Administration suggested not to invent something new, but to focus on a version of a single document: for example, a concept.

The Republican Council for Historical Policy under the Belarus President Administration was established by a decree of the Head of State on February 4th, 2022 – which was Year of Historical Memory. It includes humanities scientists, public figures, representatives of political parties, public associations, government agencies and the expert community – working on a voluntary basis. The National Academy of Sciences plays the key role, ensuring the organisational, expert-analytical and scientific-methodological support of the Council’s activity.
