SCO Secretary General said Turkiye participates in organisation’s activities
Even despite its membership in NATO, Turkiye is taking an active part in the activities of the Shanghai Co-operation Organsation, which is not aimed against other states – as noted by SCO Secretary General Zhang Ming, TASS reports
“Turkiye, which became a SCO dialogue partner in 2013, is a member of the SCO large family. Since then, it has been actively participating in various of our events,” he said at a press conference, answering a question from a journalist who asked if Turkiye’s membership in NATO would be an obstacle to its possible membership in the organisation.
The SCO Head recalled that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had taken part in the recent summit of the organisation in Astana. According to Zhang Ming, co-operation with Turkiye is based on the principles set out in the SCO charter, in line with the ‘Shanghai spirit’.”
The Secretary General explained the expansion of the SCO is carried out on the basis of legal provisions that regulate the admission of new members, taking into account the readiness of the relevant countries to participate in the activities of the association. “One of the SCO basic principles is that its activities are not directed against third parties. It has always sought to strengthen co-operation and stability rather than create disagreements,” he concluded.
