Scientists discovered large meteorite in Antarctica
An international team of scientists have discovered several meteorites in Antarctica; one of them being rare in size and weighing 7.6kg, Lenta.ru reports
To understand how rarely large meteorites are found in Antarctica, it is necessary to correlate a few numbers: over the past century, a hundred of these have been discovered on the continent. In total, 45,000 meteorites were found during this time.
As Maria Valdes, a researcher at the Field Museum of Natural History and the University of Chicago, noted that although even tiny micrometeorites are of high scientific value, it is rare to find a meteorite large enough.
The discovery was made as part of a mission that also included scientists from the Free University of Brussels and ETH Zurich. Researchers have studied potential areas of meteorite impacts in Antarctica; these were pre-identified from satellite images. In total, experts discovered five meteorites. Findings will be analysed.
