According to Reuters news agency which refers to South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, for each dog handed over to the relevant organisations, animal breeders can receive from 225 thousand Won ($170) to 600 thousand Won ($450). At the same time, the authorities will try and get as many of these animals adopted, or rehomed in shelters.

South Korean Vice Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Minister Park Beom-su said, “Although many are concerned the remaining dogs might be euthanised or a lot of them could be processed for consumption over the next three years, I can certainly say, that is not our plan.”

According to the news agency, there are over 1,500 dog breeding farms and more than 200 dog slaughter houses in South Korea.
