S. Korea testing robot for counterterrorism operations
The Defence Acquisition Programme Administration of the Republic of Korea has completed the development of a four-legged robot for counterterrorism operations, and the country's armed forces have begun testing the development, TASS reports
According to the source, the military will evaluate the effectiveness of the robot dog in the coming six months, after which they will make a final decision on its use. It took two years to develop the prototype of Hyundai Rotem and Rainbow Robotics.
The robot dog can move at a speed of more than 4km/h, overcome vertical obstacles with a height of more than 20 centimetres. It is also equipped with day and night vision cameras for surveillance and reconnaissance. To perform combat missions, the robot can also be equipped with remotely controlled firearms.
Its main functions will be to identify terrorist threats in buildings before the deployment of personnel, as well as to respond to the actions of potential terrorists with the ability to use lethal and non-lethal weapons. One of the army divisions will also use the robot in an experiment to conduct search and reconnaissance operations.
