Russian Foreign Ministry: Europe's energy suicide is in its final stage
The European Union is in the final stage of energy suicide – as stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Grushko in Baku during the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum
“The enslavement of Europe by the US is underway. The European Union has meekly and voluntarily exchanged its energy freedom – the basis for economic development – for dependence on the United States. It is difficult to imagine the conditions under which gas supplies from the United States to Europe will be provided. There were no conditions with Russia, and only the price of the contract mattered – but Europe turned away. We are witnessing the final stage of Europe's energy suicide,” Mr. Grushko said.
The Deputy Foreign Minister recalled that, in the mid-20th century, co-operation between Russia and Western Europe began to be established, and first pipelines were laid then. “Despite the obstacles and sanctions imposed by the United States, this co-operation has been embodied in relevant projects and taken out of the framework of ideological confrontation for decades. Nobody even thought of using energy as an instrument of political and military pressure,” he added.
Mr. Grushko believes indifference to the attacks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines became the final act of the EU's energy suicide. “True, it is an object of Russia, but it is actually the foundation of Europe's energy security,” he stressed.
