Russia invited Uganda to become BRICS partner
Uganda has received an invitation from Russia to become a BRICS partner country – as informed by its Foreign Minister Abubaker Jeje Odongo on the side-lines of the 1st Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, RIA Novosti reports
“Uganda has been invited to become a BRICS partner. I received that invitation about three days ago, and we are now going through all the necessary procedures to determine whether we will accept this invitation or not," Mr. Odongo said.
The Ugandan FM stressed that BRICS opens up new opportunities for his country in a multipolar world, where some African and Latin American countries share a number of Russia's principled positions in international forums.
“Given the problems facing Africa, in particular the need for rapid economic growth against the background of a rapidly growing population, the assistance that we have traditionally been accustomed to receiving from multilateral international financial institutions is no longer available. This inspires us to favour alternative sources… BRICS, China and others are the options that we are currently considering and analysing, taking into account the profoundness of the required results," Mr. Odongo noted.
As noted by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Russia has supported Uganda's candidacy as a BRICS partner.
