Rome considering restricting tourist access to popular Trevi Fountain
According to city council representatives, Rome is considering restricting access to the Trevi Fountain – one of the most popular architectural monuments among travellers – amid an expected surge in tourism, Reuters reports
The Italian capital is preparing for the Jubilee 2025, which will last for a whole year and, as planned, will attract 32 million tourists and pilgrims.
“According to the project, pre-registration will be required to visit the fountain, and the time and number of people who will be allowed access to the steps around it will be limited,” the publication reads.
Alessandro Onorato, the capital’s councillor for tourism and major event, said that it is planned to make entry free for locals, “We’re thinking of making it free for Romans. A symbolic fee of one or two Euros will be valid for tourists.”
