Rallies dedicated to 81st anniversary of Gomel’s liberation from invaders gathered hundreds of city residents

Celebrations dedicated to the 81st anniversary of Gomel’s liberation from Nazi invaders are taking place in Gomel, with participation of representatives of local authorities, labour collectives, public organisations and city residents

During the Great Patriotic War, Gomel was captured by the enemy after fierce fighting: in August 1941. The occupation lasted a little more than two years. Over that terrible period, Nazis committed thousands of monstrous crimes, including mass executions, forced resettlement of citizens for them to work hard, looting, violence and other acts of genocide.

The units of the advancing Soviet Army managed to completely liberate the city on November 26th, 1943. On the eve of one of the key events in the history of Gomel, its residents come to the memorials to lay flowers and honour the memory of those who died in the fight against Nazism.
