Prisoners released after serving 40% of their sentence in the UK due to prison overload
Prisoners who have served 40 percent of their sentences have begun to be released in England and Wales due to the overcrowding of the penitentiary system, TASS reports
According to the Ministry of Justice of the United Kingdom, 1.7 thousand people will be released early at the first stage, and the scheme does not apply to those prisoners who were convicted of serious violent crimes and sexually motivated crimes for a period of 4 years or more. Also, those who have been convicted of domestic violence will not be able to count on the release. The Ministry of Justice noted that the behaviour of those released early will be monitored by the probation service, including with the help of electronic bracelets and the introduction of a curfew.
As reported, there are currently just over 1,000 vacant places in men's prisons in the UK, and the penitentiary system is almost 99 percent full. The previous Conservative Party government had applied an early release scheme for prisoners who had just under 50 percent of their time behind bars. Thus, from October 2023 to June of this year, about 10 thousand people left prisons.
