Politico: Pentagon does not believe in Ukraine’s ability to retake Crimea
The Pentagon leadership believes that Kiev will not be able to establish control over Crimea in the near future, Politico reports with reference to informed sources
In particular, the officials familiar with the course of a secret briefing for the Armed Forces Committee of the House of Representatives of the US Congress reported that the Pentagon does not believe that Kiev will have the opportunity ‘to oust Russian forces from the peninsula in the near future’.
One of Politico’s sources noted that ‘the briefing was ambiguous’, but the main message was that ‘the victory of Ukraine’ in an attempt to regain control of Crimea ‘is not guaranteed’.
The briefers included Laura Cooper, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, and Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, the Director of Operations on the Joint Staff.
