The event – organised by the Embassy of Belarus together with the Israeli Association of Immigrants from Belarus – was dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of the Belarusian literature classics: Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas.
“Literary Readings were held in the city square, named after Yanka Kupala exactly ten years ago. A monument to the poet was erected here in 2015,” the diplomatic mission informed. The event participants spoke of the poets’ work and read their poems.
The event was attended by Eli Nacht, the Vice Mayor of Ashdod, the leadership of the regional branch, members of the Israeli Association of Immigrants from Belarus, activists of the Belarusian community, Israeli writers and lovers of the work of the Belarusian people’s poets.
The diplomatic mission informed that, in his speech, Ambassador Yevgeny Vorobyov emphasised an outstanding contribution of both poets to the development of Belarusian literature. They actually became one of its most famous founders, the fathers of the Belarusian literary language, and real symbols of the nation. The diplomat added that the Year of Historical Memory – celebrated in Belarus – gave a special symbolism to the event.
