Opinion: US brought EU to impoverishment, a drop in living standards and collapse of European economies

The countries of the European Union today carry out the will of Washington to their own detriment – as noted by political scientist Aleksei Belyaev, the Dean of the Journalism Department at the Belarusian State University

In particular, the he stated, “A wave of Euroscepticism is sweeping across Europe nowadays. This is seen during many elections, because conservative forces, right-wing or parties close to them tend to win. This is due to the fact that the idea of the European Union was very attractive in theory, but when it began to be implemented in practice, it turned out that it was not at all what it was imagined to be. The EU once seemed like a collection of peoples freely determining their destiny, deciding for themselves, but we see that today the European Union is turning into a unitary association. <...> We see the influence of the Brussels bureaucracy, which few people choose. If members of the European Parliament are still elected, then, e.g., members of the European Commission, the European Union leadership as a whole and the executive bodies are formed without taking into account the will of the voters. Who are these people? The same [European Commission President Ursula] von der Leyen who determines the destinies of the peoples of Europe. She is not an elected representative.”

According to the expert, ‘the policy pursued by the Brussels united elite today is a policy of following in the wake of the US ideas and fulfilling the will of Washington’.

“Moreover, we’re speaking about fulfilling the will of Washington directly to the detriment of oneself. Look at what the US has turned Europe into over the past few years since the Ukrainian crisis began. American authorities deprived EU members of sales markets and sources of cheap hydrocarbon resources, flooded Europe with migrants due to conflicts unleashed on the periphery, created unacceptable security conditions and a military conflict right on the continent, dragged European countries into an arms race and into financial support for the Ukrainian adventure. As a result, we see the impoverishment of Europeans, a drop in living standards and the collapse of European economies,” Aleksei Belyaev underlined.
