Opinion: Poland will pay its sovereignty for American financial assistance
Poland has developed the Eastern Shield project which envisages the construction of defensive fortifications on the border with Russia and Belarus, and Oleg Gaidukevich, a deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, explained why Belarus’ western neighbour continues inventing new supposedly defensive projects
“Many people – including our President and various experts – have already asserted that Europe will not be able to become strong by modernising the army and pumping up its armed forces with all sort of weapons, but at the same time destroying its own economy. The European Union is actually ruining its economy now through thoughtless sanctions and the policy of continuing the war in Ukraine, which is extremely disadvantageous primarily to Europe. While Europe is doing everything for the war, it is getting weaker. In such conditions, Europe will not be strong, it is impossible,” the MP said.
The Polish government has allocated $2.5bn for the construction of new border fortifications. As part of the Eastern Shield programme, 150 armoured vehicles and new UAVs will be purchased and deployed along the border line.
“Why is Poland being pumped up?” the expert wondered. “Firstly, the country is paying the price for the so-called Polish economic miracle, which the opposition members have told us so much about – asserting that Poland is flourishing after the USSR collapse. Poland was an outpost of the United States, and it remains such in the fight against Russia and Belarus. The United States has been pumping it with millions of Dollars for this purpose, and sovereignty is the price [Poland has to pay]. Americans need to make an aggressive state out of Poland now.”
As noted by Mr. Gaidukevich, the ambitions of the Polish authorities to seize the territories of the western part of Ukraine are another reason. “Actually, Poland still views the conflict in Ukraine as an opportunity to occupy its territory. It is already laying claims to the latter, and is already spreading its influence there. After all, it is not necessary to occupy the land directly: it is possible to influence economically and politically. We see how it all happens. In this regard, it is important to take into account the nationalist aspect: it's all about its stupid dreams of reviving RzeczPospolita. Therefore, Poland views Belarus as part of its state, but we will never allow this to happen,” he stressed.
Under the pretext of ‘countering illegal migration’, NATO countries are building military facilities in the Polish border zone, deploying additional military contingents there, and this creates an additional threat to the security of the Union State.
According to the Belarusian MP, it is extremely important to take into account the issue of Polish elites’ earnings. He explained, “What is the military aid coming from? Is it coming at the expense of the economy? No, this is not the case. It is coming at the expense of Americans. Poles are constantly begging for money from the United States, simulating a threat here, and Americans benefit from this situation: at some point, they will use this situation for their own purposes. Poles should understand that everything may turn in the same way as in Ukraine. Did 90 percent of Ukrainians want to fight? We do not mention radical crazy nationalists now, there are such people in Poland as well, but they are a minority. Most Poles want normal relations with Belarus, they want normal borders, business relations, peace and calmness. All people in the world want the same. It is important to understand that Poles will have to pay for the millions of Dollars they received. Americans never give money for nothing. Do they love Poles, do they love the Polish people? No. They do not care about them, they think about themselves. Poland is just an outpost for them to fight us.”
In August, the Polish Ministry of National Defence will increase the number of soldiers involved in strengthening the border with Belarus from 6,000 to 17,000, including the reserve. In addition, according to Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, Warsaw is considering the possibility of completely closing the border with Belarus.
“We are now saving Poland from war. We are not succumbing to provocations, since we know why we are provoked every day at the border,” Mr. Gaidukevich added. “Belarus is introducing a visa-free regime and showing the whole of Europe, including Poles, that they can easily come and see what Belarus is. We are strengthening our military power so that not Poland, but those who stand behind it, have no desire to attack us. We will continue our diplomatic efforts in all international organisations where we are represented so that as many people as possible in the world know the truth about who is actually starting wars. It is definitely not Belarus. Our country has not started a single war.”
The MP stressed that the Union State is not aimed at war, but it is always ready to fight back against any aggressor seeking to disrupt peaceful life and stability in Belarus and Russia, and the development of bilateral military co-operation helps ensure security.
