Opinion: Belarus is at forefront of the fight against fascism that is developing in Europe
A deputy of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Oleg Gaidukevich, noted that the ban on May 9th celebrations in Latvia does not meet the needs of this country’s ordinary citizens
As noted by the Alfa Radio presenter, Polina Konoga, the Latvian Seimas adopted a law banning celebrations on May 9th, as well as holding mass festive events, rallies, marches and pickets in public places countrywide. As reported, the document is aimed at preventing threats to the democratic values of Latvia, as well as false coverage of historical events.
In turn, Mr. Gaidukevich noted that Hitler also said that books were a threat to the national security of Germany, while he was burning them, “He was a fascist, and I would not use any politically correct words. Just think about it: [Latvian] Parliament decided to ban the celebration of May 9th, the day when our grandfathers and great-grandfathers woke up, learned that the war had ended, when they had tears in their eyes. Millions of people died for Europe to flourish today. Our great-grandfathers liberated the whole of Europe, and we must remember this – and we will remember! Fascists now forbid celebrating this day, but they will never be able to destroy this holiday. People in the Baltic States will celebrate it secretly, because this decision does not reflect the interests of the people. Do you think people in the Baltic States do not want to celebrate May 9th? They do, they respect this holiday, but their government is criminal. Lithuania and Latvia are completely dependent on the United States now. They have quarrelled with all the neighbours, they are pursuing a Russophobic, Belorusophobic terrible policy, and they no longer know how else to draw attention to themselves. They forbid May 9th celebrations for the same purpose: to draw attention to themselves, to show what kind of fighters against Russia and Belarus they are, to say that they are ready for anything.”
Mr. Gaidukevich added that everything is being done in Belarus today to demonstrate how important the Great Patriotic War is for the Belarusian people, “How the Prosecutor's Office works on the issues of genocide, how we banned the rewriting of history in our Constitution. It will always be sacred for us, and all this needs to be done. In the end, we are again saving Europe from informational and political fascism. We are again fighting the fascist elements that have developed throughout Europe. Look at how some people congratulated Hitler on his birthday on various social networks. What have we lived up to? Therefore, fascism has not gone anywhere, and we are again at the forefront of the fight against it. We will fight against it – and we will win, like our grandfathers and great-grandfathers.”
