New wave of refugees in Europe possible after ceasefire in Ukraine
Experts from Clingendael – the Netherlands Institute of International Relations – assert the ceasefire agreement in Ukraine could lead to a new wave of refugees pouring into Europe, TASS reports
According to experts, the ceasefire may lead to the lifting of the state of emergency, which would allow many men who are currently not allowed to leave the country to visit their wives and children in European countries. An increase in migration could also trigger a peace agreement with potentially poor economic prospects.
Experts also claim that Europe itself contributes to migration. While some countries, such as Hungary, are tightening their policies towards Ukrainian refugees, others are ‘becoming increasingly interested in displaced people from Ukraine as additional labour in aging societies’.
In addition, according to experts, Ukrainians do not want to return home. At the moment, there are about 122,000 Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands, 72 percent of whom do not plan to return home in the next two years, even if Ukraine becomes safe again.
