Nebenzia said common sense prevailed in UN General Assembly
Common sense, justice and humanism were able to prevail in the UN General Assembly – as noted by Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation at the UN Vassily Nebenzia after the adoption of the Middle East resolution, TASS reports
“This is not a victory of some national position. It is a victory of common sense, justice and considerations of humanity,” the diplomat noted.
“This resolution is the least of what we can and are obliged to do for them [civilians of the Gaza Strip and Israel]. Unfortunately, due to the position of Western delegations, the UN Security Council was unable to make any decision, but the voice of the united Arab world and all sensible members of the international community has prevailed in the UN GA,” Nebenzia added. According to him, now the parties to the conflict must listen to the resolution and stop the violence.
During the 10th emergency special session for the protection of the Palestinian people, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the Middle East, which was developed by a group of Arab countries with the support of a number of other states, including Russia, and submitted for consideration by Jordan. 120 countries voted for the document, 14 were against it, and 45 abstained. Canada’s proposed amendment condemning Hamas did not receive enough votes.
The document consists of 14 points. The first of them calls for an immediate humanitarian truce. Moreover, the text contains demands for compliance by all parties with international humanitarian law, the immediate provision of basic necessities to the Gaza Strip, the release of all civilians, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and a call for the cancellation of the order of the Israeli authorities to relocate the Palestinian population and UN personnel to the south enclave.
