National Co-ordinator for Achievement of SDGs: world become hostage to selfish approaches of Western countries
The world has become hostage to the selfish approaches of Western countries based on the desire to ensure their interests at the expense of the others – as stated by the National Co-ordinator of Belarus for Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly, Sergei Khomenko, in his speech at a plenary session of the Summit of the Future in New York
“It is necessary to stop this dangerous dynamic and take the world away from the edge of the abyss. This is possible only if there is political will. We are urging all states to show such will and start a global security dialogue in the spirit of San Francisco, the idea of which was expressed by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko seven years ago," Mr. Khomenko said.
According to the Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic, the purpose of such a dialogue is to develop common constructive principles for building a new just multipolar world order. “As the Belarusian leader noted in his recent message to the UN Secretary General, ‘we see the value of the Summit of the Future in the fact that it provides us with another chance to co-ordinate joint actions in the areas where it is possible’. We are convinced that, even in the current difficult situation, the UN member states can and should effectively address common challenges and threats. We hope that the Summit of the Future will give additional impetus in this direction, especially in the areas that it directly affects,” he said.
Mr. Khomenko added that such an impulse is necessary against the background of weak interim results on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals on a global scale.
