Myanmar intends to conduct population census using satellite
The Republic of the Union of Myanmar intends to use Earth remote sensing technologies to conduct a population census in conflict areas of the country, RIA Novosti reports
The Chairman of Myanmar’s largest party, USDP (Union Solidarity and Development Party), Khin Yi, stated in an interview with RIA Novosti, “The new census will be conducted on the basis of the [census] figures of 2014, 2019 and new collected data. Where data cannot be collected for security reasons, we will use new Earth remote sensing technologies to calculate the population living in the territory."
The official added that the new population census will be held on October 1st-15th, 2024. It is expected to help update statistical data and avoid fraud in the general elections, which will be held in the event of the lifting of the state of emergency.
In 2021, after the military accused the authorities of rigging the elections, armed conflict resumed between the central government of Myanmar and some armed groups of national minorities.
